Lacuna [AutoHeal002]

2021

Lacuna [AutoHeal002] Self-Healing Concrete Sculpture (Concrete, Calcium Lactate, Bacillus Subtilis) Shown at Chelsea UAL Degree Show (Open Studios) 2021.

Sculpture based on on a 3D representation of GAN Generated Imagery of Female Nipples Scraped from ImageNet, a massive online dataset used for training image recognition AI. In the absence of real imagery of the female body contained in the dataset, this sculpture is a ‘female nipple’ generated out of the repression of the primary object itself, a phallic replacement from the collective fear of the female body created out of the medicalised objects used to sanitise and replace it. The sculpture itself is constantly in a state of healing and regeneration, filling the cracks and fissures in its body from bacterially reprocessed calcium lactate turning into white streaks of calcified limestone.
